What is Sleeping In The Dirt?

So a friend of mine recently asked me a question, "What exactly is Sleeping in the Dirt?"

Well Ken I never planned for anything to happen with this. I really wanted a place to share photos with families and friends of days on the water, trips, Hudson, and in general: all things fishy.

Eleven months later it's turned into a tribute to people who share a common lifestyle. Looking back over the course of 2009 I'm humbled by the water covered, friends who shared it with me, and fished fooled.

Sleeping in the Dirt is you. Sleeping in the Dirt, is every one of us who wishes they could be on the water and not stuck in a 4x6 grey cubed cell. Sleeping in the Dirt is a twelve hour hike down a canyon to catch fifteen inch trout. Sleeping in the Dirt is knowing that it's not only about the catching, the real win is the journey. Sleeping in the Dirt is taking time to teach your children that spending time with them is the best part of you. Sleeping in the Dirt is guides, painters, bloggers, photogers, film tour stars, industry movers, and beginners. Sleeping in the Dirt is being able to understand RA's ramblings on "Living It". Sleeping in the dirt is having building a mix-tape to drive-to when you're on your way to a fish. Sleeping in the Dirt is tying #2 salmon flies out of materials you can find at truck stop, while driving 75MPH on your way to the Madison. Sleeping in the Dirt is waking up to smoke and fire when your at the bottom of a canyon sixty miles from pavement. Sleeping in the dirt is catching an Apache trout and a Tarpon...in the same day. Sleeping in the Dirt is beer in your Cheerios. ... It is a 100 days on the water (plus) every year. ... It is knowing you will die on the water. It is hoping you will. .. It is not being able to walk away from the rise. ... It is stopping by the local pond or canal every day on your way to work just so you can cast at carp for five minutes. ...It's a 1000 hits per day, dozens of articles, more photos then you can remember, and an honest desire to befriend a fellow angler. It is every day dream you have while in the office, wishing that you were ankle deep in a drift. It is the very best of me, Hudson. A child's pure joy to fish. If you read this site, it is you.

I never intended it to be any of this. Now in January it will be a magazine: Year One, Volume One: Sleeping In the Dirt.

Nice post AO. I think you forgot "Sleeping in the Dirt is peeing in your radiator while a forest fire bears down on your crippled Land Rover."
